ARTISAN Project - AI-powered XR training

Agentic Reality Training in Skill Acquisition for Next-generation Manufacturing

Starting September 1st, 2025, AugmentedRealm and consortium members are launching the ARTISAN project, funded by Advanced Digitalization. Together, we're developing an AI-powered XR system that captures expert knowledge and transfers it to new operators through automated documentation and contextual guidance.

The Challenge

Swedish manufacturing faces a critical skills gap. With 72% of companies struggling to find qualified workers and experienced operators taking 6-9 months to train newcomers, the industry needs better ways to preserve and transfer expertise. Traditional documentation methods are time-consuming and often fail to capture the nuanced knowledge that makes workers truly effective.

Our Solution

ARTISAN combines XR technology with AI to create an automated knowledge transfer system that captures how expert work actually happens, not just how it's supposed to happen according to manuals.

Digital Knowledge Capture: Expert workers wear XR headsets during normal operations while cameras, sensors, and voice capture document their actions without disrupting existing workflows.

AI-Powered Analysis: Multimodal AI analyzes video, audio, and sensor data to automatically identify key steps, tools, and decision points, creating structured procedural knowledge without manual annotation.

Contextual Guidance: New operators receive step-by-step instructions through XR, with information appearing directly in their field of view and object highlighting that adapts to user experience level.

Why This Matters

ARTISAN addresses a fundamental challenge: how do we preserve decades of industrial expertise and make it accessible to the next generation of workers? Our human-AI collaboration approach enhances rather than replaces human capabilities, ensuring that critical knowledge isn't lost as experienced workers retire.

This project represents a new approach to industrial documentation - one that captures the reality of how expert work actually happens, creating a bridge between experts and the workers who will carry manufacturing forward.
